The Gift of Fire article recently published was clearly done by some brilliant people. I was a C student in my major at college and could tell when people were a weight class or so above me.
I will say this, there are cases where it doesn't matter. Being smarter only comes to play if the problem domain is sophisticated enough for it to matter. They may have AI that can beat a human at Go, but can't do much better than forcing a tie at Tic-Tac-Toe against a 6-year-old.
