Armies of empty nesters with file cabinets full of newspaper clippings spill their guts on webpages just crude enough that you trust that the goal wasn't to impress you with graphic design. The knowledge hobbyists began to turn the tide by eliminating anal swabs from the story."
True stories of psychopathic/sociopathic behavior by leaders and celebrities were, in the past, purchased as exclusives by these kinds of rags. It's called "catch and release" and was explained to me by a lawyer for such a magazine years ago. The goal is to keep the story out of traditional media (who often held off on it to allow those rags to buy it), and put it in a publication that would discredit it by running it alongside absurd fiction.
In the internet age, motivated researchers---sometimes highly qualified people like retired scientists and professors or otherwise smart people---investigate those stories that were made to look absurd or like "conspiracy theory" with detailed analysis. Not all their conclusions are correct because stories with large gaps are challenging to arrange, and resources are often limited. But the result is that far more people understand that horrifying things have gone on in their country that were kept out of the news and history books. This has led to heightened awareness of what is likely going to prove to be an existential conflict that will engulf the world soon.

I used to like magazines like Weekly World News when I was a kid.
Now the MSM is the new Weekly World News, mostly fiction but on the contrary it's not entertaining nor fascinating.
It's the game theory of propaganda.
