I don't think I have ever read a better response to the moral obligation question concerning the US military.
Strange how things have flipped. Just over two decades ago, so-called "conservatives" we're perhaps the most gung-ho pro military people around. They foolishly backed the wars and things like the "Patriot Act".
I guess it is better to wake up late than never. Many people I know have contacted me to say essentially, "You were so right... I should have listened". It's such a pity. I urge everyone to discourage their children from considering a military career. But Matthew is right, any moral person still enlisted is an overall positive thing.

If you want a competent military, you need some veteran units. That means that you have to keep some troops practiced with modern weapons and they have to know how to use weapons in actual combat. Mere training won't suffice.
The nazis practiced in Spain. The Italians practiced in Africa. The Japanese practiced in China. The US didn't practice and spent the first two years of World War II playing catch up. The US lost territory in the first year of its involvement in WW II – Guam, the Philippines, Kiska and Attu in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and Wake Atoll.
This lesson has not been lost on the Pentagon, but the pacifist American public doesn't know the lesson.
China lacks veteran troops. That is not the case for Russia or Ukraine or any countries participating in the war in Ukraine. The Taliban has veteran troops.

Yes - our family has had many who served and a close relative who’s been deployed several times recently.
Serving the country in spite of military bureaucratic politics was their goal.
