RTE Roundtable Talk #5: Natural Immunity to SARS-CoV-2

Featuring Steven Pelech, PhD and James "Dr. Jack" Lyons-Weiler, PhD

We recorded a day earlier than usual this week, and did not air this podcast live, but those interested in understanding natural immunity, the failure of vaccine immunity, and to get a grip on how not novel SARS-CoV-2 was in 2020, you're going to want to hear these two scientists out.

I had not previously spoken with Steven, whom Liam knows through Steven's leadership with the Canadian COVID Care Alliance (CCCA). Steven is one of the world's experts in the kind of immunological surveillance that should have been taken up around the world. You may also want to stop and think through why his research was not duplicated by public health officials, or made standard. Instead of running an overly narrow seroprevalence search, he cast a sort of statistical net based on pieces of the whole, and found that even in 2020, the vast majority of Canadians he tested had already been exposed to SARS-CoV-2. (I hope I've explained that well.)

Dr. Jack's breadth of immunology research during the pandemic proved to be an excellent complement. He also weighed in on a topic that has vexed many of us, even to a level of harassment: do viruses exist? We got to discuss the state of proxy trust about science in society, and during that time I came to the conclusion that the way the virus existence skeptics should be answered is with this challenge: pick somebody trustworthy from your community to put in the work to a point of full understanding of the laboratory procedures and trustworthiness of the literature (or even specific labs or individuals).

These two highly experienced scientists had a great deal more to say than I've mentioned very briefly here, and by the end of the discussion I felt blessed that these talks are for me a magnet for experts who are generous enough to educate us all, but answer questions for me in particular. It turns out that one of the best parts of running a podcast is that it's better than a university education, minus the lab time. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
